The New Wife: 'Beneath that groomed exterior, there’s some messy stuff going on.'

Welcome to bestselling author Sue Watson who has dropped by to tell us all about her latest novel The New Wife and to give us the lowdown on one of her characters.

While we're waiting for your guest to arrive, Sue, can you tell us a little about your book?

Georgie's beloved son, Sam, is marrying his childhood sweetheart and she couldn’t be prouder of the man he’s grown into. Walking out on Sam's abusive father all those years ago was the best thing she ever did. And today he stands, tall and handsome, saying ‘I do’ to Georgie's dream daughter-in-law. If she hadn’t pushed them together all those years ago, he might never have found a girl as perfect as Lauren. It’s true what they say, mother always knows best.

But weeks later, Lauren is dead and police cars fill the driveway of their idyllic countryside home. As they question Sam, she senses he’s hiding something. Why won’t he look her in the eye? And who does he rush off to meet as soon as the police are gone?

Desperate, Georgie does what every good mother would do: she lets herself into Sam and Lauren’s bedroom. What she sees, she will never be able to forget. Her son’s beautiful new wife was hiding a dangerous secret. Can she clear her son’s name? And could her life be in danger now too?

You can never truly know what goes on behind closed doors…

Who will you be inviting for a cocktail, Sue, and why?

I would invite Lauren, the beautiful young bride in The New Wife, (my next book, released on

November 19). I know Lauren likes a drink, and I also know she has a lot of secrets, and I think it

would make for a very interesting – perhaps even shocking, evening.

What will they be wearing?

As a junior doctor, Lauren works hard – she also likes to play hard, and loves to party. I think she’d

turn up in a strappy designer dress, with heels. Her make-up would be impeccable, with smoky eyes and scarlet lips. When she isn’t working, Lauren always wears her hair down and tousled - a hint that beneath that groomed exterior, there’s some messy stuff going on.

What will they order from the cocktail menu?

She loves luxury, misses living in the city, and loves the bright lights, so would order a champagne

cocktail, for the sheer self-indulgence and fizz. She’d order The Gatsby Champagne cocktail, she’d

like the literary reference, and relate to the sheer decadence but emptiness of the Jazz Age Scott

Fitzgerald documents. The cocktail contains Angostura, a bitter spice with a sting in the tail. The

recipe for Angostura Bitters is a closely guarded secret, and Lauren has lots of those.

How will they react if the waiter spills their drink on them?

Lauren would be cool. She’s pretty laid back, she might even flirt with the waiter? A spilled drink is

nothing compared to the other, much darker things going on in her life.

What can they tell you that will make you stay for a second drink?

Who killed her and why…

Time for one more...

While she was with us, Sue very kindly gave us the recipe for Lauren's favourite cocktail which we'll be adding to our cocktail menu!

The Gatsby Champagne Cocktail Recipe:

1 sugar cube

Angostura Bitters

A lemon or orange twist

Soak the sugar cube in Angostura bitters, then place at the bottom of a champagne saucer

and pour the Champagne over it, allowing the sugar to dissolve. Top with an orange or

lemon twist.
