Welcome to Marrisse Whittaker, author of The Devil's Line!
While we're waiting for your guest to arrive, Marrisse, can you tell us a little about your book and who you'll be sharing a cocktail with today?
DSI Billie Wilde is back at work after a shocking case that saw her life thrown into utter turmoil. But Billie isn’t only Wilde by name and refuses to let the past drag her down. When a teenage girl is killed, her body discovered on train tracks, Billie sets about focusing all her attention on finding out who is responsible and why.
As Billie and the police find a link between the girl’s murder and a County Lines gang, the case takes a sinister turn.
Someone has been using children to peddle drugs. Someone who will stop at nothing to get what they want. Someone who is closer to home than Billie can possibly imagine…
Who will you be inviting for a cocktail, and why?
Today I`m inviting DSI Billie Wilde for a cocktail because she’s Wilde by name and definitely wild by nature. Feisty, fun and the keeper of many secrets, even about her own past . She will never reveal where the bodies are buried without a few very strong drinks.
What will they be wearing?
If Billie Wilde is in the middle of a working day, she will be wearing Doc Martins, jeans and whatever random top she left on the floor the night before. If she is caught on the hop and has to visit a posh spot, then she will usually score something at the last minute, from colleague DS Beduwa Mensah.
Known as Boo, Billie’s colleague and friend has little need for the long slinky dresses hanging at the back of her closet, since being injured in the line of duty. They’re an accident waiting to happen as she speeds about in her flash silver wheelchair. With Billie’s long legs and slender figure, she rock’s even the most revealing borrowed frock like a catwalk model. But the truth is, she isn’t remotely aware or likely to care about that fact.
What will they order off the cocktail menu?
Living right on the edge of the sea, where a winding terraced path through her garden leads to the spectacular sandy shore, she would probably order Sex on the Beach. It wouldn’t be the first time…
How will they react if the waiter spills their cocktail over them?
If a waiter spills Sex on the Beach over her, Billie would probably take it as a sign that he subtly wants to take her aside to clean up, where he can spill some crime related beans in relation to her latest case. She would certainly be ready to debrief him. But he’d be wise not to jump to the wrong conclusion. When Billie is on the track of a serial killer, murder is absolutely the only thing on her
What can they tell you that will make you stay for a second drink?
Billie would tell me that it was a crazy day, right from the start, the day that she found out that she had been erased from history. Snuffed out. Not even a single fragrant posy to mark her premature burial place. She will also tell me that during her most recent investigation, she found out a shocking fact about freshwater shrimp and illegal drugs, that will change her eating habits and probably yours, forever.
