'I hope the solution will challenge even the most ardent murder mystery fans. '

Welcome to the lovely author Mairi Chong who has dropped by to tell us all about her new novel Death by Appointment and to give us the lowdown on one of her characters.

While we're waiting for your guest to arrive, Mairi, can you tell us a little about your book?

Death by Appointment is the first in the Dr Cathy Moreland Mystery series, in which Cathy, an overworked general practitioner recuperating from a severe mental breakdown, travels to a remote Scottish coastal village hoping to find peace. While there, she is told of a tragedy from thirty years ago when a local woman jumped from the rocky headland clutching her new-born baby. Hearing this, Cathy is obviously upset but when another tragedy occurs at exactly the same spot, it becomes clear that all is not what it seems. A deadly malice creeps the winding lanes that surround the hamlet. Its stealthy footfalls are tender and reassuring but its true intent is as cruel as the sea itself ...

The book is a heartfelt murder mystery and I hope the solution will challenge even the most ardent murder mystery fans.

Who will you be inviting for a cocktail, Mairi, and why?

I will be inviting Dr Cathy Moreland, an overworked and rather self-doubting GP because she rarely goes out unless her old medical school friend, Dr Suzalinna Bhat, now an A&E consultant, forces her. Cathy doesn’t let her hair down nearly enough since her diagnosis of bipolar, for fear of relapsing, but a night out occasionally, wouldn’t do her any harm. She needs a drink after solving the latest murder mystery in her Scottish rural town of Glainkirk anyway.

What will they be wearing?

Cathy isn’t a glamourous sort and will probably come straight from work at the doctors’ practice anyway, so she’ll be wearing her smart but comfortable consulting clothes. If Suzalinna was joining us, she’d be dressed in the most sparkly outrageous dress imaginable but Cathy likes to blend in rather than stand out!

What will they order from the cocktail menu?

Cathy is quite conventional and she’d rather not mix drinks as she takes strong antipsychotic medication for her bipolar disorder so she’ll have a white wine spritzer, thanks very much!

How will they react if the waiter spills their drink on them?

She will probably apologise and say it was her fault. Cathy is very empathetic after a rough few years herself, so she’d never want to make anyone uncomfortable (unless they’ve committed murder in or around her medical practice!)

What can they tell you that will make you stay for a second drink?

Cathy and Suzalinna had some wild medical student days and even solved a murder back then. Maybe Cathy would regale us with how their anatomy cadaver didn’t die as naturally as the medical school thought and how she and Suzalinna tracked down the poor woman’s killer. To be fair, Cathy has a whole host of mysteries she could tell you about, but she’d never break any confidentialities and you’d have to draw it out of her.
